Thessaloniki (or Salonica), the elegant second largest city of Greece and heart of Macedonia, with its very long and eventful history, boasts over a million inhabitants. Since 1950, Thessaloniki with its thriving commercial and industrial sector has become a commercial powerhouse in Southern Europe with its Univsersity City and International Trade Fair that has contributed significantly to the Greek economy. The city is built on the shores of the Thermaic Gulf and the slopes of the Hortiati range. From a tourist point of view, Thessaloniki is ideally placed for daily excursions to the Royal Tombs at Vergina, Pella, Phillipi, Odion, Meteora and many other places. Chalkidiki, just an hours drive from the city, a distinctive three pronged peninsula resembles a trident piercing the Aegean and features a coast lined with 500km of beautiful beaches, hills and mountains thick with green forests. It is a natural paradise that has been left relatively unscathed by modern developments, a land of contrasts, where endless sandy beaches meet idyllic coves, the air is scented with pine forests and the turquoise sea separates the three narrow prongs of Kassandra, Sithonia and Mt. Athos. In addition to featuring quaint fishing spots and spectacular scenes it also offers a wide selection of first class hotels with all the conference and convention facilities. Thessaloniki A tour of Salonica incorporates a visit to both the modern and the ancient city, the archaeological museum with the fabulous Vergina treasures (finds from the tomb of Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great), the Byzantine churches and the ruins of the Roman market and Theatre. Lunch at the famous "Krikella" restaurant. Dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel. Amphipoli - Phillipi - Kavala
Enjoy a day excursion to Kavala, over the Asprovalta coast, passing the impressive lakes of Koronia and Volvi, arriving at ancient Phillipi, the scene of defeat of Brutus and Cassius and where St. Paul first preached in Europe. Visit the Basilica, Forum and the ancient Theatre. Lunch at a harbour restaurant in Kavala and return in the afternoon with a stop at the Amphipolis Colossal which in the 4th century was the cross-road between East and West. Dinner at the hotel. Leisure day for relaxing and exploring the local sights. Mt Athos Cruise An exceptional day excursion that combines the historical Mt. Athos with a leisurely cruise. Civilsation has not intruded into this Holy Mountain which is inhabited solely by monks. Centuries of isolation and devotion have endowed the Holy Mountain with a unique mysitcal atmosphere. Athos with its virgin forests and its overwhelming beauty, its 40 odd monasteries and its invaluable wealth of ecclesiastical treasures is a pilgrimage not to be missed. The cruise ship sails ina south-easterly direction along the three peninsulas of Chalkidiki, passing through the varied landscape with its small valleys and gorges and densely forested mountains. A sail along the coast of Mt. Athos peninsula displays the 1100 year old Byzantine monastic community. Olympos - Dion - Meteora The excursion departs via Salonica for Olympos, the tallest mountain in Greece which according to Greek mythology was the residence of the 12 Olympian gods. Visit Dion where the ancient Greeks offered sacrifices in honour of the Olympian gods.
Then continue on to Kalambaka for a visit to the ancient monasteries of Meteora which are perched on top of 1500 foot rock spires. Amid the striking scenery these exquisite specimens of Byzantine art seem to dangle from the precipitous rocks as if suspended in mid air. Return to the hotel in the evening for dinner. Pella - Vergina A day excursion to Pella, Alexander the Greats birthplace and then on to the archaeological sites of Vergina with the recently discovered tomb of Phillip II. Lunch at Veria, a prominent Macedonian city and return to the hotel in the afternoon. |
